The Senate Sergeants-at-Arms are sworn Peace Officers in accordance with PC830.36 of the State Penal Code. The responsibility of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms is to ensure the safety and security of Senators, their families, legislative staff, designated foreign delegations, and the public. The position requires that Senate Sergeants maintain the decorum of the Senate by providing support, protection and oversight of Senate floor sessions as well as committee hearings so that the legislative process proceeds efficiently and unencumbered.
DUTIES:
• Oversee Senate Floor session and legislative committee hearings
• Provide security for Members and staff
• Remove, detain, and/or arrest individuals found to be disruptive to legislative hearings and offices
• Respond to and investigate threats against Members and staff
• Respond to and assist with medical emergencies
• Conduct emergency evacuation of the Capitol building and the Legislative Office Building (LOB) in the event of fire, natural disaster, or other security contingencies while maintain the continuity of State government
• Travel throughout the state with Senators and Senate Committees for the purpose of maintaining order, decorum, and security for Members, staff, and the public
• Act as security liaison with other local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Be a United States citizen or other authorized resident
• Must be between the age of 21 years and 45 years old to apply
• Possess a valid California Driver’s License, a clean driving record, and current automobile insurance
• Pass a background check; the conviction of a felony or other relevant circumstances may be grounds for disqualification
• Drug and alcohol screening will be required post job offer
• Ability to lift up to 55 lbs.
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time while maintaining environmental awareness and keenness of observation
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
• Successful completion of a Peace Officer or Law Enforcement Academy (Sacramento Police Academy, Special Investigator’s Basic Course (SIBC), Sacramento Sherriff’s Academy, etc.)
• Prior military service
• Possess a Bachelor’s Degree
• Professional demeanor; neat personal appearance
• Have strong writing and analytical skills
• Good communication skills with diverse groups of people
• Display a high level of integrity, demonstrate reliability, and possess the ability to maintain strict confidentialities
PAY RANGE & FILING DATE:
Salary starts at $4116 per month but is commensurate with experience and qualifications;
